BLM Implements Stage I Fire Restrictions for the California Desert District
Rising temperatures combined with dry vegetation warrant the issuance of permits for campfires and barbecues throughout the California desert region. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) today implemented Stage I fire restrictions on all BLM-managed public lands within the California Desert District (CDD).

Effective May 15, Stage I restrictions require that all campfires and barbecues are allowed with a permit that can be obtained at all BLM field offices, fire or ranger stations and patrol personnel. Stage I general area of influence includes BLM lands north and east of the Angeles, San Bernardino and Cleveland National Forests.

Stage I areas may be elevated to Stage II during periods of extreme fire danger. Stage II Restrictions state that setting, building, maintaining, attending, or using open fire of any kind, except campfires within approved fire pits and grills provided for in developed recreation sites, is prohibited. Controlled flame devices such as portable stoves fueled by petroleum or LPG products are allowed by permit.

Any person convicted of knowingly or willfully violating a fire prevention order can be fined up to $1,000, receive up to 12 months in jail, or both. That person also is liable for the cost of damages and suppression of the wildfire.

"We are asking the public’s help to prevent potentially disastrous wildfires throughout southern California," stated Steven Borchard, BLM CDD district manager. "BLM will be making a strong effort to get the word out about fire prevention and public safety - we must work together."

The public is also reminded of the following restrictions that apply to all public lands within the California Desert District regardless of stage restrictions and are applicable year round.

1) The use or possession of fireworks, including “safe and sane” is prohibited on all public lands of the California Desert District;

2) the possession or discharge of a firearm using incendiary, tracer, steel core, or armor piercing ammunition is prohibited on all public lands of the California Desert District;

3) No person shall burn, ignite or cause to burn any tire, petroleum product, wires, magnesium, or any other hazardous or explosive materials;

4) All off-road vehicles being operated on public lands must be equipped with a properly installed spark arrester pursuant to 43 CFR 8343.1 (C) and California Vehicle Code 38366(a). The spark arrester must meet either the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Forest service Standard 5100-1a, or the 80% efficiency level standard determined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAEs) recommended practices J335 or J350.

These prohibitions are in addition to the general prohibitions in Title 43 CFR 9212.1.

For more information or to obtain a permit contact the BLM’s California Desert District Office at (951) 697-5200 or local field offices in Barstow (760) 252-6000, El Centro (760) 337-4400, Needles (760) 326-7000, Palm Springs-South Coast (760) 251-4800 or Ridgecrest (760) 384-5400.

Michele Silcock-1196:
Thanks for the up date, will stop and get one.

ms:
You may pick up one between 9am-4pm, at the fire station.

Kim:
Dumb, or maybe not question. Does this mean we need to stop at the fire station in Lucerne to get a permit to have a campfire for the weekend? Or blm? Where I live you have to go through cdf not the local fire station.

ms:
I was told any fire station or BLM office. 9am-4pm. The closest one to the race would be best. Call them and see! I called the Barstow office.

Hey Jim, Dave Cote 1191. We've registered for the race but we're not on the entry list ( DOR-Chip Rodriguez )But you already show us starting in the first three. Also I would like to know if it is ok with you. I would like to ask all the other class 11's if they are interested in doing another lap or two. ( 500 mile ???? Let the 11's go big)

desert:
we are not signed up yet but will be there for the race and my team would be more then happy to turn another lap or 2 with you hopefully we can get the other 11's to want this as well
1183 point b racing

fyi:
The time limit for this race is 14 hours, so that would virtually make it impossible for an 11 car to run what you are proposing.....

dave cote:
yes, i understand that it is impossible for an 11 to do 500 miles. I'm just talking about doing 1 more lap. And that would still give everyone plenty time in case there were problems.

dc:
That would put us close to 300 miles and that would be a great race for the 11's.

So...... I just found out that the 982 wont be ready to run the next race. I am pretty bummed and really want to race that weekend. I am looking for a ride in pretty much anything. I am VERY familiar with the workings and mechanics of any of the VW based cars. I have thousands of miles under my belt as a back up driver. I set fast lap at the first two races of the year in MORE for class 9.

Anybody that needs a good driver that is easy on equipment, just let me know. I can also help with some expenses.

Thanks!

A lot of very fast 1 cars as well as 10s, 12s and 16s at this one. Best wishes to all the racers, pitters and spectators for a safe event! Remember it's a long day/night so keep you head and look out for each other.

Faster Class Racers: Please keep in mind that the course is shared with your fellow competitors who paid their entry and have just as much right to the course as you do. When you approch a slower car or a slower class show some restraint and class and don't play the punt/run game. Jim has always said abusive nerfing will not be tolerated at MORE. Use your horn, light taps and give the person time to react and don't expect them to wreck their car getting out of your way. Remember they are racing their own race.

Slower Class Racers: There are 20+ Class 1 cars and they are racing just as you are. If you see one approaching signal them, give them room to pass as soon as possible and remember when there's one there's usually more. Hopefully the faster classes will show some class and not punt the limited classes in their haste to win and when they do, move out of the way ASAP. It's very frustrating to be patient, knowing the guy behind you might not show the same courtesy.

Spectators/Chasers/Pitters: It's going to be a long day followed by a long night. Watch the alcohol consumption, moderation is the key to survival. It's a long race and teams will be mobile. There is no reason to do Mach 10 on the chase roads, the minute you save may cause more tragedy than it's worth. Incidents don't only happen in Baja as is evidenced by last weekends tragedy. Life/safety is more important than getting to the spot 5 mins before your car does and if you miss it by 30 seconds it's still moving and you weren't really needed anyway so let the "Chase Ego" go and think of safety for you and your fellow enthusiasts. These night races always draw a diverse crowd, and with the course passing by a few of the favorite "hot spots" used by another association which has proven a point of concern; the following might be prudent advice for some and an appeal to others to watch out for your fellow spectators/desert enthusiasts. Curb your consumption of adult beverages and drink plenty of good ol H20. If you see someone out of control or causing an issue be part of the solution not the problem. If an issue persists or escalates too large contact MORE who in turn can contact the BLM/Sherrif's that attend these events.

It's going to be a long day. Be safe, have fun and best wishes to all the competitors, teams and spectators for a safe, enjoyable event!

Jim@MORE:
Well said M.O.R.E. Racer. THANKS!!!!

MaMA Worm-1196:
Got it!! Thanks

Doug:
Will Do Jeff, Thanks

Jim@More:
Hey Doug I didn't want to say any names. but we are on the same page here. again very good.

Perry #738:
VERY well said!!! Cannot wait to see all our fellow racers out there! Looking forward to a GREAT/SAFE race!!!

We still have a few spots if anyone needs help.

Hey Guys,

I just wanted to let everyone know that FAIR will running full service pits for the upcoming ORAF 500 next month. In an effort to find new members we are opening up our services to non-members for this race. We have more than enough FAIR members racing so we will be there in full force. If you would like to use FAIR to provide pit support at the race here's what you get and here's what you need.

What you get:
1. FAIR will have Full Service Pits with Light Towers at MM20, MM34, MM45.5 plus a Main Pit. Each pit will be complete with generators, welders, base station radios, tools, jacks, air tools, good people, water for your drivers and generic fluids.
2. Race updates from each Pit as your car passes it on Frequency 150.860
3. We will take up to (2) of your spare tires to each pit.
4. We will be out on the course until the last FAIR car is finished or called out of the race.

Hello, I'm racing in 1471 and was wondering if anyone had the GPS lat/longs for the course. The file on the website requires Google Earth Plus. I was looking for something in an Excel/Word format.

Thanks

Patricio:
That is actually not the file for google earth. It is a usr file for your gps. It is only the waypoints though, no connecting lines showing the path between the way points not really sure why.
